In November 2009 I joined a Naturetrek group for an organised birdwatching holiday to Ecuador. This was my first specialized trip and proved to be very well worth doing. We stayed at forest lodges in three locations – Maquipucuna, Rio Blanco and Guango – and explored a variety upland habitats on both slopes of the Andes. We identified somewhere in the region of 200 different bird species, 34 of which were Hummingbirds. The bio-diversity in the forests of Ecuador is extraordinary and there are great  opportunities for all types of wildlife photography.
